HISTORY OF THE PILATES METHOD

Who was Joseph Pilates?

J.Pilates was born near Dusseldorf,Germany in 1880.
As a child Pilates suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. His determination
and drive to overcome these aliments led to the study of both Eastern and Western forms
of exercise and to becoming a competent skier, diver and gymnast.

In 1912 he went to England and became a boxer.Whilst there,World War I broke out and he was subsequently interned with other German nationals in Lancaster.
After the war,he returned to Germany to continue his work in divising a physical programme.

In 1925,Pilates teaching came to the attention of the German goverment who were
interested in having him help train the new German army.It was then that he decided to immigrate to America.

In New York he and his wife Clara opened up a body-conditioning studio containing machines that he designed to enhance his rehabilitation work.
It soon became very popular with the dance community offering a chance to recover from
injuries and to improve and strengthen their technique.
Dance legends such as Ruth St.Denis,Ted Shawn,Martha Graham,George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins passed through his studio.

Pilates always felt that his work was probably 50 years ahead of its time.

The Pilates method is not just a series of exercises but a complete approach to
developing body awareness and an easy physicality in day to day life.
It requires commitment from both the teacher and the client as it takes time to improve
and change the body`s postural and alignment habits.

Osteopaths,Physiotherapists and doctors are now recommending Pilates as the
safest form of exercise today.

WHO IS TEACHING

My name is Anastasia Theodoridou.I was born and raised in Thessaloniki,Greece.
All my life i was involved with fitness(exercising) of any kind:bicycling, swimming, jogging,Aikido, aerobics, but mostly dancing:classical and contemporary.
In this area i got quallified as a dance teacher after a 3-year training in the Teachers` Professional School of Thessaloniki. Always interested in the way bodies move or stand or create postural habits,i commited myself to the Pilates method.
I started my training in London, compelled by the need to train people of all ages and fitness background.
I believe that we keep on forgetting that our bodies are living mechanisms until a part of it hurts. So,i would like within
my work, knowledge and experience to help other people really feel their body, listen to its specific need,do their workout properly and enjoy it.
